The OSGeo Board is pleased to announce that it has approved the application by the pycsw project to enter the incubation process. Incubation is a stepping stone to becoming a full fledged OSGeo project.

pycsw is an OGC CSW server implementation written in Python.

pycsw fully implements the OpenGIS Catalogue Service Implementation Specification [Catalogue Service for the Web]. Initial development started in 2010 (more formally announced in 2011). The project is certified OGC Compliant, and is an OGC Reference Implementation.

pycsw allows for the publishing and discovery of geospatial metadata. Existing repositories of geospatial metadata can also be exposed via OGC:CSW 2.0.2, providing a standards-based metadata and catalogue component of spatial data infrastructures.

The pycsw development team is happy to announce that pycsw 1.4.0 is now
certified OGC Compliant for OGC CSW 2.0.2 [1], and passes all 103 CITE
tests.

As well, pycsw is now an official OGC Reference Implementation. A
demonstration instance of the reference implementation is available at
http://demo.pycsw.org.

Standards are at the core of pycsw; acheiving OGC compliance and
reference implementation status is part of the project's ongoing
commitment to an open source, standards-based metadata and catalogue
component of spatial data infrastructures.

The pycsw team announces the release of pycsw 1.4.0.

The 1.4.0 release brings numerous features, enhancements and fixes to the codebase, including:

* WSGI server support
* harvesting support for WFS, WCS, WPS, and other CSW endpoints
* support for Open Data Catalog integration
* enhanced support for GeoNode 2.0 (GeoNode development branch)
* support for distutils setup/install, which enables pycsw to be installed as a library
* support for PyPi
* support for displaying counts for GetDomain requests based on queryable properties
* support for requestId request parameter
* fix GetRecords sortby parameter support for HTTP GET
* support for W3C XLink 1.1 migration
* support for Debian and Ubuntu packaging

This release also marks our migration to GitHub for source code management, issue tracking and wiki.

• What can't be missed is the Open Source Geospatial Foundation fifth birthday. There's also a cake and various ideas for celebrations. I vividly remember OSGeo's initial press release, which I helped translate at the time. The highlights shared by Daniel (first link):
  • OSGeo went from 8 founding projects in 2006 to 20 software projects today (including 6 in incubation)
  • OSGeo's annual FOSS4G conference turned into a truly international event, visiting 4 continents over 5 years
  • Over 20 local chapters are active around the world, promoting OSGeo's software and mission in their local language and communities.
  • Daniel also reminds us that GRASS GIS, the open source desktop GIS, goes abck to 1982, MapServer around 1995 and GDAL/OGR in 1998.
• If you have interest in OGC Cataloging Services and metadata, there's a new open source CSW server in Python project named "pycsw"
• Here's an entry on Web based printing with QGIS server and another one named importing a DBF containing X-Y Values into QGIS
• Via this weekly summary, I learned about Maps4Mac open source app to get OpenStreetMap data in MacOS X

Regarding open data:

• MapQuest announced extented use of OpenStreetMap data in their entry named MapQuest Opens Up The Americas, Completes World Routing, Adds New Open Services, there also is an entry specific to MapQuest's introduction of alternate routes.
• MapQuest imagery and OpenStreetMap tiles were added to the open source GeoExplorer
• While I found little information about it I learned about OpenTouchMap, based on OpenStreetMap data, here's the OpenTouchMap.org website
• Natural Earth vectors are now available in the cloud, we mentioned NE data now being public domain last December
