Here's the recent geospatial open source / data news for the last 8 days or so.

On geospatial open source:

• The Autodesk-supported web mapping software MapGuide Open Source 2.2 was released
• Here's a preview of GeoRepository, and advanced authorization manager for GeoServer and the new GeoServer-Manager, a simple Java client library for GeoServer
• OpenGeo introduced the OpenGeo Gallery, to answer the question 'who uses the open source software that OpenGeo supports'
• There's the first release of Image Georeferencing View for uDig 1.2.1
• GeoTools has a new User Guide and so does Sextante GIS
• Shapely 1.2.10 has been released

On open geospatial data, mostly OpenStreetMap:

• We mentioned the book last September, and now Geoweb Guru offers a review of the book 'OpenStreetMap: Using and Enhancing the Free Map of the World'. From the review: "Due to the overview nature of a wide range of different applications and projects, it is likely that quite a bit of the book will become out of date quite quickly. It is also likely that the data model will evolve."
• Here's an entry on directions (and correcting erroneous routing behavior) with OpenStreetMap

• I smiled when I read the newly introduced "NoGIS" term, remisnescent of WebGIS and neogeography, James Fee shares what he thinks of it
• Slashdot discusses ESA's GOCE satellite detailed information about the Earth's gravitational shape
• If you're that curious, the last Google imagery update included the set from the upcoming 'The Hobbit' movie shot in New Zealand
• The Geonames blog shares an update on the geolocation of Wikipedia articles and Wikipedia Web Services

• TMR links to NYT day-by-day situation map of the Libyan uprising
• JF mentions a nice Census map analysis of New York City using Google Fusion Tables
• Here's a map of Canada's ridings for the national election early next month

• O'Reilly is enthusiastic about Boston real-time transit data now available
• Here's an entry named Government institutions and OpenStreetMap in practice

• News of the integration of a 3D globe directly in QGIS, and while we're at it, a summary of the QGIS hackfest

• Here's an entry named Wikipedia makes OpenStreetMap more prominent
• There's a few entries a critique of OpenStreetMap, another specifically on city labels in OSM
• The Wall Street Journal estimates Open Source Mapping Poses Threat For TomTom, Nokia
• Here's OpenHeatMap, an online tool for creating heat maps and choropleth maps

On the open source software front:

• Shapely 1.2.6 has been released
• OpenGeo won a contract with UK's Odnance Survey

Here's an attempt to catch up the "recent" geospatial open source news that were published the past three weeks.

Let's start with the 'everything else' category:

• In August there was an introduction entry on QGIS MapServer, a "WMS server for the masses"
• Around the same time, an entry indicating GRASS GIS can make pretty maps
• There was an introduction to MOSSKitt Geo, an UML tool for spatial databases
• Here's an entry on comparing Oracle GeoRaster with PostGIS WKT Raster
• There's news on the OGR MS SQL 2008 Spatial driver
• Shapely 1.2.4 is out and Rtree news
• The OpenGeo Suite Community Edition 2.1.3 was released at the end of last month and the OpenGeo workshops are also available - what a wonderful resource!
• Here's the steps done by ESRI towards open sourcing their Geoportal Extension
