GPS Leads Tourists to Hollywood Sign Gridlock

Christina Hoag reports that the once tranquil hills around the Hollywood sign are now gridlocked with tourists trying to find the best view of the famous landmark. Local residents claim that their out-of-the-way streets were quiet until GPS units recently began directing tourists right to their doors.

Google Maps Adds Live traffic information for 13 European Countries

European users will be glad to know Google added live traffic information for 13 European countries.

From the announcement: "The new road traffic information is in the traffic layer on Google Maps and Google Maps for mobile, and Google Maps Navigation (Beta). Today we’re announcing new coverage in Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Spain and Switzerland. Coverage includes all freeways and highways, as well as large roads in major cities. Users in the UK will also benefit from a finer grain of street level coverage.

[...] The live traffic layer is regularly updated to show information for traffic events from the last 5-10 minutes. Finally, you can learn more about typical traffic conditions for specific times and days of the week by clicking the “change” link in the traffic legend on Google Maps, and setting the day of week and time."

Google Maps Navigation (Beta) Now Routes You Around Traffic

Google announced a new feature of Google Maps Navigation (Beta) which now routes you around traffic.

From the announcement: "So we’re happy to announce that Google Maps Navigation (Beta) will now automatically route you around traffic. With more than 35 million miles driven by Navigation users every day, this should add up to quite a bit of time saved! [...] You don’t have to do anything to be routed around traffic; just start Navigation like you normally would, either from the Navigation app or from within Google Maps. [...] Starting today, our routing algorithms will also apply our knowledge of current and historical traffic to select the fastest route from those alternates."

Directions Magazine Articles: Opportunities of the GeoCloud, Geo vs Data Vizualization, The New Geospatial Jobs, and more

Here's a few Directions Magazine articles published in the past month that I found interesting:

  • An article on GIS Computing in the cloud. The summary: "Author Philip O'Doherty believes our thinking may be too small when it comes to GIS computing in the cloud. One of the big problems with GIS today, writes O'Doherty, is that it is seen as a specialist tool, available only to a limited number of people in a limited number of organizations. GIS as a Service could change the game entirely by making GIS capabilities available to potentially hundreds of millions of users." A snippet: "The GIS sector needs to change dramatically if it is going to avoid being left behind in the new geospatial wave."
  • An article on mapping technologies destined aligning with other data visualization technologies. From the conclusion: "However, geospatial visualization alone is an incomplete picture unless it is able to launch other visualization elements which manipulate and dissect information based on an endless array of other visual contexts as well. In the case of catching the bad guy with exploding undergarments; contexts other than space would be time, severity, risk, relevant keywords, category, relationships, etc."

  • Here's an article named Leveraging GIS to Enhance Shopping Center Performance
  • Here's an artilce on TomTom's 'Traffic Manifesto'. The summary: "On October 20th, personal navigation device maker TomTom released its “Traffic Manifesto,” a document stating that the company is on a mission to reduce the hassles of traffic congestion for everyone by up to 5% whether they use TomTom’s products or not. The following day, Editor in Chief Joe Francica paid a visit to TomTom’s headquarters in Amsterdam, The Netherlands to get a firsthand look at TomTom’s traffic management center and find out how TomTom will achieve its objective."
